Organizing Spices

There is not a "right" way to organize spices, but a right way for you! Here are a few options to choose from:

  • Alphabetically
  • According to color
  • According to category/use (herbs, Mexican, baking, etc.)
  • According to how often they are used
  • According to size
I have mine organized according to category/use on lazy susans. I have all my baking spices in one cabinet with baking items. I have herbs and savory spices on another lazy susan in a different cabinet. In that same cabinet I have another lazy susan with salts and peppers. I also store my vinegars together and oils together.

Spices can live on lazy susans, in drawers, in spice racks, on shelves, or on spice shelves.

Awhile back I reorganized my spices on a magnet board. It's been a huge help! I blogged a pic of it here (the post is about something else I needed to get organized, but if you scroll down you can see what I did): http://skooksplayground.blogspot.com/2010/01/tools-of-trade-needle-grabbit.html

Fabulous idea, Marissa. Where did you get your magnetic bottles?

I like to keep my baking spices with my baking goods because then I can just have everything in one place. Also it is easier to see when I run out. My sister and I are having a debate about how long I can keep my sea salt and other spices! Your opinion? We are both faithful readers of yours. Thanks!

Hi Terri,

Sea salt is a mineral (a rock, actually) and will last indefinitely. Spices, on the other hand will last about a year, experts say. But I keep mine longer. A good way to tell if your spices or herbs are losing their punch is to open the container and take a whiff. If the aroma is weak, so will be the flavor.

Ebay! They were actually made from watch cases with magnets glued to the backs. I have seen the same idea before but with baby food jars instead of the watch cases (with magnets glued to the lids). I always get compliments on my makeshift "rack" when people come over!
